The awards are named in honor of pioneering cartoonist Will Eisner, who is most famous for creating The Spirit and popularizing the now ubiquitous term “graphic novel,” but who was also one of the first American cartoonists to take up the task of studying comics language with an eye for teaching it.Įvery year, on the Friday night of San Diego Comic-Con, the Eisners honor the best in American comics, cartooning, and comics-related publishing. The crown jewel of Comic-Con’s beating comic book heart is the Eisner Award Ceremony.
